KMS DISTRIBUTES SPORTS
EQUIPMENT TO GOZITAN NURSERIES

During the last seasonal sports festival organised by the
Kunsil Malti ghall-iSport (KMS), held at the Gozo Stadium on Saturday
June 14 2008, the KMS awarded aid to various sports club in Gozo. The
sports festival was as usual organised with the collaboration of the Gozo
Football Association. Parliamentary Secretary Hon. Clyde Puli, in the
presence of KMS officials, acting chairman Bertie Muscat, CEO Joe Cassar and
co-ordinator for Gozo Joe Bajada and officials from the GFA, Gozo Youth FA
and a number of coaches from Skola Sport of the KMS together with
representatives from a all Gozitan nurseries.
The clubs that
received the aid were those that participated in the activities organised
regularly during the season by the KMS. These were the Gozo Football
Association, the Gozo Youth FA and the affiliated nurseries together with
the Sports Complex of the Sacred Heart Seminary. The latter provided their
facilities to the KMS whenever these were needed to organise certain
activities. The aid was distributed according to an order of merit based on
attendance.

KMS’s
initiative confirms its commitment to organise more activities in Gozo and
attract more youngsters for physical education that will lead them to
practice a type of sport. This objective may only be achieved through the
improvement of sports facilities, training and equipment.
The
presentation by Hon. Clyde Puli took place following a visit that the
Parliamentary Secretary made at the sports festival and had an opportunity
to speak with the young participants. The official ceremony took place at
the headquarters of the GFA. Gozo’s KMS co-ordinator Joe Bajada welcomed
Hon Clyde Puli on his first official visit to Gozo. Joe Bajda gave details
of the activities organised by the KMS, consisting of sports festivals and
other activities, since it started operating in Gozo eighteen months ago.
Through these activities, the KMS is not only implementing its legal
obligation stipulated in the law of the sports which holds the council
responsible for all the sports in Malta and Gozo, but is generating more
interest in physical education. The variety of sports practiced in these
programmes, followed by professional staff, is a guarantee to encourage
participants to get involved in a sports discipline.

Joe Bajada
expressed appreciation for the support given by the GFA, who understood the
concept put forward by KMS and accepted an agreement so that these
programmes may be implemented. Other festivals organised by the KMS in Gozo
were organised at schools with the collaboration of Local Councils, which
included these activities as part of the programmes commemorating the Day of
the Locality. Joe Bajada added that the KMS is implementing its obligation
also by providing resources and facilities to promote sports on the island.
In concluding Joe Bajada stated that the KMS is also open for suggestions
and applications for help as long as they fall within the parameters of the
KMS regulations.
GFA general
secretary Alvin Grech also delivered a short message where he thanked KMS on
behalf of everyone for the help that was being distributed. He said that as
soon as Joe Bajada started the discussions about these programmes the GFA
was determined to make a success of this initiative, something which
actually happened. He wishes that in the future these programmes will
continued as well as the collaboration between the two entities.

Parliamentary
Secretary Hon. Clyde Puli stated in his message that he is convinced that
the participation in sports and physical exercise will increase in Gozo
through the various programmes organised by the KMS together with Gozitan
Associations and clubs. He said that during the past months the KMS worked
hard to improve so see an improvement in the level of sports in Gozo. Hon.
Puli pointed out that the programmes organised by the KMS include the
necessary exercises to develop coordination for different types of sports,
which help young children to develop their individual abilities which will
not only lead them to specialise in a particular discipline but will also be
useful for their personal development.
Hon. Puli added
that the sports festivals organised by the KMS are complementary with other
programmes that were launched in Gozo such as Girls on the Move, Bike Rides
and the Swimming School. He concluded by thanking all those who contribute
to make these sports programmes a success, amongst them co-ordinator Joe
Bajada, the GFA, the Gozo Youth FA, the Sacred Heart Seminary, Oratory Don
Bosco and the Gozo Branch of the Red Cross.
