Gozo FC registered a large victory over Kalkara FC and obtained their second consecutive victory from as many matches in the campaign. The Gozitans practically made sure of the three points with a three-goals scored during the first period. The visitors were demoralised after the break and Gozo controlled play without any difficulties. The hosts had an excellent start and opened the score in the 3rd minute through a header by Charles Merceica following a free kick by Brian Meilak. Kalkara’s reaction arrived minutes later with an effort by Kevin Tonna following a solo effort that missed the target. Gozo continued to be dangerous and went close to increase the score on more than one occasion following efforts by Johann Attard, Charles Mercieca, Brian Meilak and Joseph M Portelli. Kalkara’s best scoring opportunity arrived in the 26th minute through a free kick by Kevin Tonna that ended wide. Gozo doubled the score in the 45th minute with another close ranged header by Charles Mercieca, this time following a corner kick by Joseph M Portelli. Seconds later Gozo increased the lead with a goal by Joseph C Portelli, who entered the area with a solo effort and placed easily into an open goal. Kalkara seemed demoralised after the break, while Gozo reduced their pressure. However, the hosts continued to be dangerous and in the 48th minute an effort by Joseph C Portelli from a good position ended wide. Kalakara could have scored a consolation goal in the 54th minute but Gozo’s goalie Joseph Grima saved well a free kick by Kevin Tonna. The score became 4-0 in the 57th minute with a goal by substitute Josef Butigieg who placed behind goalie Edmond Grech with an angled shot. In the 80th minute Gozo’s John Camilleri incredibly headed wide from close distance following a cross by Brian Meilak and minutes later it was goalie Edmond Grech who denied Josef Buttigieg from scoring his second personal goal. Gozo sealed the victory with a fifth goal scored in the 90th minute by substitute Joseph Cefai who concluded a fine move by John Camilleri on the left flank. Referee: Andre’ Sciriha |
