GHARB RANGERS FC ...... (R Zammit 9’; A Farrugia 55’, J Apap 59’pen)

Zebbug Rovers made sure of ending the season at a respectable place on the table with a fine victory over bottom placed Gharb Rangers.  The Rovers were better than their opponents through the match and deserved the victory.

Gharb were aiming to obtain at least a point to take some lead over Oratory and Munxar in the tussle to avoid the bottom place on the table.  However, their efforts came at the expense of leaving some gaps at their defence and were therefore punished by the Rovers.

The Rovers were unlucky in the 6th minute when an effort by Basil Chibueze was cleared off the line by Anthony Camilleri.  The Rangers opened the score in their first serious action which arrived in the 9th minute through a shot by Ryan Zammit that surprised Zebbug’s goalie.

However, Zebbug produced an immediate reaction and levelled the score in the 13th minute from a penalty awarded for a foul by Anthony Camilleri on Joseph Cordina and converted by the same Cordina.

The Rovers were now in the driving seat and turned the result in their favour in the 25th minute through Franco Magrin who concluded a pass by Joseph Cordina.  In the 33rd minute Basil Chibueze had an attempt that hit the woodwork but the score became 3-1 in the 42nd minute with another goal scored by Franco Magrin.

On the resumption the Rangers produced a good reaction and managed to reduce the score in the 55th minute through Arthur Farrugia. However, Zebbug regained the two goal lead one minute later with an angled shot by Basil Chibueze.  Gharb kept insisting and in the 59th minute they re-opened the issue when the referee awarded a penalty for a foul on Arthur Farrugia and Jonathan Apap placed in goal with his shot from the spot kick.

Zebbug sealed the issue in the 65th minute when Basil Chibueze headed in goal from close distance following a melee in the area resulting from a shot by Magrin the hit the crossbar.  In the 76th minute Gharb’s substitute Maurice Saliba was unlucky when his attempt hit the woodwork.
