Zebbug Rovers were close to register a surprise result in their match against Xewkija Tigers but lost concentration after an hour of play and ended up suffering a heavy defeat.  Once again the Tigers found it difficult to face the Rovers, and the victory which keeps them at the top of the table was hard-earned.  Xewkija’s striker Christian Bugeja, who was making a return after suspension, scored four goals, including the three goals that mattered most.

The Rovers had an excellent start and opened the score after only 20 seconds of play through Joe Hili who concluded a pass by Basil Chibueze.  Xewkija had an immediate reaction and levelled the score in the 5th minute with a half volley by Luc Tefogno following a cross by Christian Bugeja.

The Tigers kept insisting and Zebbug’s goalie Darren pace was called to make a difficult save in the 11th minute following a header by Mark Camilleri.  The Tigers turned the result in their favour in the 13th minute from a penalty, awarded for a foul by Joe Hili on Luc Tefogno, and converted by Christian Bugeja.  Zebbug relied with an effort by Chibueze that was blocked by goalie Joseph Grima, but the Tigers regained command of play and could have increased the score through efforts by Christian Bugeja, Mark Camilleri and Joseph Cefai.

After the resumption the Rovers went close to scoring through a shot by Mario Calleja that ended just high.  Xewkija were unlucky when an attempt by Luc Tefogno hit the crossbar.  Zebbug were awarded a penalty in the 56th minute for a foul by Josmar Vella on Joe Hili and Joseph Cordina scored the equaliser with his shot from the spot kick.  Minutes later Xewkija’s goalie Grima was called to make a difficult save following an attempt by Chris Buttigeig following a pass by Franco Magrin.  However, Xewkija regained composure and were dangerous with a header by Mark Camilleri and two attempts on separate occasions by Michael Pace.

Xewkija were rewarded for their efforts in the 69th minute when they regained the lead.  It was Christain Bugeja who netted from close distance following a cross by Luc Tefogno.  The same Bugeja increased the lead in the 77th minute with an excellent strike form an angled position.

Christiian Bugeja, the current top-scorer of the category, scored his 25th personal goal of the campaign and sealed the issue with a goal scored in the 84th minute following a personal action. Referee: Anton Zammit
