ZEBBUG ROVERS FC ...... (N Mercieca 8’; F Magrin 39’; C Buttigieg 58’)

St Lawrence Spurs and Zebbug Rovers ended the season on a positive note and obtained a point each from a draw of six goals.  The match did not have any impact on the final standings as the two sides were already certain of a respectable place on the table.

Considering the competition of the lower category both St Lawrence and Zebbug should be satisfied with their achievements.  In this last match for the two sides the players gave their best and produced an entertaining match which left the final result uncertain until the final whistle.

The two teams came out very aggressive and it was not surprising that the match produced four goals during the first period.  St Lawrence opened the score in the 6th minte through a strike by Oliver Farrugia.  However, Zebbug managed to level the score two minutes later with a low shot by Neville Mercieca following a cross from the right by Alvin Grech.

The Rovers kept insisting and produced some good scoring opportunities through Charlton Borg and Chris Buttigieg.  The Spurs regained the lead in the 23rd minute with a direct free kick by Jesmond Xerri that surprised Zebbug’s goalie Darren Pace.

Minutes later Zebbug’s Neville Mercieca concluded over the crossbar an inviting pass by Franco Magrin.  The same Magrin scored the second equaliser for his side in the 39th minute by concluding a wall pass with Basil Chibueze.

The Spurs took the lead for the third time in the match after only four minutes of play into the second period with a lob by Jesmond Xerri.  The Rovers were not demoralised and the score became 3-3 in the 58th minute with a goal by Chris Buttigieg who headed in goal a corner kick by Alvin Grech.  Although the two sides were tired they still continued to obtain the victory.

The Spurs were also unlucky in the 74th minute when an effort from the edge of the area by Jesmond Xerri hit the crossbar.  In the 80th minute Zebbug’s keeper Darren Pace made a difficult save to turn in corner a strike by Jonathan Micallef from an angled position.  Three minutes from time St Lawrence’s goalie Samuel Micallef saved the point for his side when he blocked Basil Chibueze from concluding a personal action.
