THE WANDERERS OBTAIN A CONVINCING VICTORY PRIOR TO THEIR DIRECT CLASH FOR PROMOTION

SK VICTORIA WANDERERS  FC ......  (M Buttigieg 25’; I Adesina 42’ pen., 59’)

ST LAURENCE SPURS FC ......

SK Victoria Wanderers obtained the double over St Lawrence Spurs with the same result of their match from the second round of the campaign.  It was a convincing victory for the Wanderers.  As expected they dictated matters and practically made sure of the three points with two goals scored during the first period.  St Lawrence lacked motivation.  They were out of the promotion challenge prior to this match and were also coming from a close defeat against other contenders for promotion Xewkija Tigers.

The Saints produced their best patch of play during the first minutes of the match.  Louis Galea went close to put the Spurs in the lead on two occasions but in both attempts he missed the target.  Victoria increased pressure as time passed by.

In the 10th minute an effort by Chris Sciortino was blocked with difficulty by goalie Samuel Micallef.  The same goalkeeper was called to make other difficult saves in the following minutes to deny Ajibade Adesina, Chris Sciortino and Ige Adesina from opening the score.

Victoria managed to take the lead in the 25th minute.  Ige Adesina entered the area with a personal action and from his pass Mark Buttigieg guided the ball in goal from close distance.

The Spurs failed to produce a reaction and their goalkeeper kept his side in contention with other difficult saves following attempts by Ige Adesina while a good shot by Mark Buttigieg ended just over the crossbar.

In the 42nd minute the Wanderers were awarded a penalty for a foul by Marvin Zammit on Ajibade Adesina and Ige Adesina placed in goal with his shot from the spot kick.

Play was mainly in the midfield after the break.  The Wanderers were in control of the result and never risked to let the Spurs re-open the issue.  Victoria increased their lead in the 59th minute through Ige Adesina who concluded in style a personal action.

Until the end the Saints continued to find it very difficult to penetrate Victoria’s rearguard.  The citizens could have scored more goals but good efforts by Ajibade Adesina and Chris Sciortino in the dying moments of the match ended wide.
