St Lawrence Spurs started the third and final round of the
campaign on an excellent note and obtained three easy points
against lowly Qala St Joseph. The Saints dominated the
match, created a number of good scoring opportunities during
the first period and practically made sure of the win with
two goals scored in the space of one minute during the early
stages of the first half. Qala tried to resist pressure but
were never in contention to win at least a point from this
encounter
The Spurs opened the score in the 6th minute when Paul
Anthony Attard entered the area with a personal action and
his low shot cross was deflected in goal by defender Nathan
Portelli in an attempt to clear danger. Qala failed to
produce a reaction and on 14 minutes a shot from outside the
area by Daniel Micallef ended high. Three minutes later
Gothard Conti unmarked Shaun Muscat but the latter concluded
badly and goalie Kenny Grima saved without difficulty. One
minute later Qala’s goalie saved a low angled shot by Paul
Anthony Attard and the same Attard lost a good scoring
opportunity on 22 minutes when he concluded incredibly wide
from and ideal position following a solo action. Qala went
closest to level the score four minutes later but an effort
by Patrick Falzon following a counter break ended wide. Six
minutes from half time goalie Grima saved a good effort by
Gothard Conti and in the 44th minute it was Christopher
Cauchi who concluded wide following a personal action.
The Saints continued to dictate matters after the break.
In the first minute of play a strike by Christopher Cauchi
was turned in corner with difficulty by goalie Kenny Grim a
and from the resultant corner action Laurant Pisani’s shot
ended just wide. In the 52nd minute an attempt by Paul
Anthony Attard was stopped by the post. The Spurs doubled
the score four minutes later. Goalie Grima blocked an
effort by Paul Anthony Attard and from the rebound Gothard
Conti lobbed easily into an open goal. The same Conti
increased the lead two minutes later as he took advantage of
some hesitation by the goalkeeper and deposited the ball in
an open goal. Two minutes after the hour of play Paul
Anthony Attard had a good strike that just missed the target
and on 65 minutes it was Christopher Cauchi who went close
to scoring with a strike from outside the area. The Maroons
reduced the deficit two minutes later through a low angled
shot by Denis Abela following a cross from the left by
Patrick Falzon. However, one minute later St. Lawrence
re-established the three goal difference through a strike by
Shaun Muscat following a short clearance by the defense
following a move by Paul Anthony Attard. On 80 minutes
Gothard Conti won a tussle at the edge of the area but his
effort ended wide. However, Conti registered his personal
hat-trick and made the final score 5-1 three minutes from
time with a shot from outside the area. Munxar could have
added another goal one minute from time but a low angled
shot by Christopher Cauchi ended inches wide.
