Oratory Youths returned to winning ways in their match against Qala St Joseph and with the three points obtained they rejoined Munxar Falcons and Zebbug Rovers on the third spot on the table. Oratory, despite having central defender Chris Attard, Andrew Zammit and veteran prolific striker Dione Lautier missing, deserved the three points. They practically made sure with two goals scored during the first period and administered their superiority for the rest of the match. The Maroons were quite adventurous during the first part of the match as they shared play in the midfield. However, they got demoralized after suffering the second goal and never managed to create scoring opportunities to re-open the issue. They also lost their best chance to reduce the score ten minutes from time when they had a penalty kick that was saved by Oratory’s goalkeeper. Play took place mainly in the midfield during the first part of the match although Oratory held an edge of their opponents. Oratory opened the score in their first serious approach to Qala’s goal. In the 16th minute Joseph Grech took advantage of some hesitation in Qala’s area following a cross from the right and guided the ball in goal from close distance. Qala tried to produce a reaction but the closest they went to scoring was on 33 minutes through a shot from outside the area by Marcell Meilaq that was neutralized by goalie Franklin Vella. Three minutes later Qala’s defense cleared with some difficulty a corner kick by Francesco Cini, the ball arrived again at the same Cini and from the counter cross Charles Xuereb headed wide from close distance. Oratory doubled the score four minutes from the break through another tap-in by Joseph Grech following a low cross by Joshua Cassar. Oratory could have increased the score after four minutes of play into the second period when Derek Bugeja’s overhead missed the target and from the loose ball a second attempt by Bugeja was saved with difficulty by goalie Kenny Grima. On 53 minute a shot from outside the area by Qala’s Daniel Cutajar ended wide. Qala took some advantage as Oratory reduced the pressure. Qala had a golden opportunity to reduce the deficit on 80 minutes when the referee awarded a penalty as Joseph Abela’s cross was handled by Marvin Grech, but Dennis Abela’s penalty kick was saved by goalie Franklin Vella. Qala were punished for the missed chance as Oratory increased their lead two minutes later through a header by substitute George Frank Mizzi following a corner kick by Alex Sacco. The match was now decided and the two goalkeepers were not called to make any other interventions until the final whistle. Referee: Reno Refalo |
