An early goal scored after just eleven minutes of play by Joseph Bartolo paved the way to a victory for Xaghra United in their penultimate match of the championship against Munxar Falcons. Xaghra now need that leaders St Lawrence Spurs to drop points in their next match so that the Blues can challenge for promotion in the last match of the campaign against the same Spurs. However, St Lawrence can become mathematically champions of the category with a victory in their next match. The encounter against Munxar lacked particular excitement as the early goal compromised the rest of the match where Xaghra controlled their lead as the Falcons seemed weak in their approaches towards their opponents. Xaghra sealed the victory with another goal that was scored during stoppage time. Xaghra took command of play from the very beginning and opened the score on 11 minutes through Joseph Bartolo who guided the ball in goal following a cross by Sam Frank Bajada. Three minutes later Xaghra were dangerous through a long ranged strike by Philip Attard that missed the target and on 34 minutes Munxar’s goalie Daniel Curmi saved with difficulty a free kick by Anthony Bajada. The Falcons could have levelled the score after just three minutes of play into the second period but Shaun Attard concluded wide from an ideal position and inviting pass by Mario Azzopardi. Xaghra reduced their pressure but continued to create good scoring opportunities. On 79 minutes an effort by Xaghra’s Michael Bezzina was deflected by defender Robert Hili but goalie Daniel Curmi recovered in time and saved in corner. In another occasion an attempt by Eman Bugeja ended wide and on 81 minutes Johann Attard’s shot ended over the crossbar. Six minutes later a strike by Michael Bezzina missed the target and on 90 minutes goalie Daniel Curmi turned in corner an effort by Sam Frank Bajada following a corner kick by Eman Bugeja. Xaghra made sure of the three points with a second goal scored in the second minute of stoppage time through Philip Attard who placed in goal with a low shot a pass by Sam Frank Bajada.
