St Lawrence Spurs made sure of winning the Division Two championship and promotion to the top flight with a victory over Munxar Falcons. St Lawrence were determined to earn this honour in this match and avoid any risks in the final match of the campaign against rivals Xaghra. The victory in this match was practically never in doubt. Although the Spurs found some difficulties to convert their territorial supremacy into scoring opportunities they still maintained command of play, opened a two-goal lead by the end of the first half and kept their area clear of danger for long stretches. The victory of the championship was also well deserved. They were consistent throughout the campaign and above all they won the decisive matches that ended up making all the difference with the contenders. The Spurs came out very aggressive but Munxar’s defence were well deployed and resisted the pressure. The first serious scoring opportunity arrived on 26 minutes through a shot on the run by Paul Anthony Attard following a cross from the right flank that shaved the post. Five minutes later St Lawrence opened the score through an excellent strike by Gothard Conti who fired to the top of the net from an angled position following a cross from the left flank. On 34 minutes a header by Daniel Micallef from a corner action was incredibly lifted over the crossbar from the goalmouth by Shaun Muscat. In the 44th minute Munxar’s goalie Daniel Curmi was called to make a difficult save to turn in corner a shot from outside the area by Jonathan Micallef. From the resultant corner action Daniel Micallef once again header towards the goal and Gothard Conti was at the right place to guide the ball in the net from close distance. Munxar’s reaction after the break was sterile as St Lawrence started to control their two-goal lead and operate with counter breaks. The Spurs increased their lead on 55 minutes. Jonathan Micallef unmarked Shaun Muscat in the area and the latter placed easily in goal with a low shot. Munxar best scoring opportunity arrived on 70 minutes but Daniel Pace concluded wide from an ideal position. St Lawrence replied one minute later through a lob by Gothard Conti that missed the target. Munxar managed to pull one goal back on 78 minutes when substitute Donald Borg was released by the other substitute Joseph Cordina and placed in goal with a low shot. Two minutes later the Saints were reduced to ten players when Paul Anthony Attard was sent off for a foul on Robert Hili. However, the match was already decided and there was not enough time for Munxar to recover the deficit so that the Spurs started their celebrations as the referee whistled the end of the encounter.
