Munxar Falcons and Qala St Joseph earned a point each in a goalless draw so that each team maintained their place on the table. At the end the result is disappointing for Munxar as they lost much of their advantage over the rivals who are aiming to challenge for the third spot. They held territorial supremacy during the match but failed to capitalize from the scoring opportunities that they created. On the other hand it was a deserved point for Qala. They produced an effective defensive match and frustrated their opponents who started to be erratic in their finishing. The Falcons took the initiative of play from the beginning. In the 5th minute they were awarded a penalty for handling by John Rapa but Joseph Mizzi’s shot from the spot kick was saved by goalie Kenny Grima. Seven minutes later a header by Anthony Camilleri from a corner kick by Joseph Calleja was well saved by goalie Kenny Grima. On 14 minutes a shot by Joseph Mizzi ended wide and on the half hour of play the same Mizzi unmarked Daniel Pace in the area but the latter concluded wide from a good position. The same Pace had another attempt on 37 minutes that missed the target. In the final stages of the first half Qala managed to push forward but long ranged shots by Patrick Falzon and Charles Muscat ended high. After the restart Munxar continued to dictate matters and on 49 minutes an effort by Joseph Mizzi ended wide. One minute from the hour of play Daniel Pace entered Qala’s territory, lobbed over the goalkeeper at the edge of the area but the kick was weak and the rearguard recovered to clear the danger. The Maroons replied in the following action with an attempt by Christian Portelli from a corner action that ended wide. Munxar were again dangerous on 71 minutes when substitute Christian Micallef came face to face with the goalkeeper but his lobbed was cleared in corner from the goalmouth by defender John Rapa. Munxar could have scored a late goal but on 87 minutes Christian Micallef headed incredibly wide from a good position following an inviting cross by Mario Azzopardi. The same Azzopardi lost the last scoring opportunity of the match when he concluded wide a free kick by substitute Shaun Attard in the third minute of stoppage time. Referee: Joe Agius |
