Munxar Falcons obtained three easy points from their match against bottom placed Gharb rangers and regained the third spot on the table. Munxar’s win matured with two goals scored in each half. This was also Munxar’s third win over Gharb in the campaign. The turning point of the match was probably Munxar’s second goal which arrived seconds from half time so that Gharb found it extremely difficult to produce a reaction in an attempt to recover the deficit. Play was quite balanced during the early stages. Munxar were dangerous after six minutes of play when an effort by Anthony Camilleri from a corner action was cleared off the line by defender Harry Cassar with the goalkeeper beaten. Gharb replied with a header by Saviour Cassar from a cross by Jonathan Apap that ended just wide. On 9 minutes Gharb were again dangerous through a low angled shot by Jonathan Apap that was turned in corner with difficulty by debutant goalkeeper Damien Spiteri. Munxar opened the score on 20 minutes through a low shot by Mario Azzopardi following a through pass by Joseph Calleja. Gharb replied three minutes later through an effort by Roy Vella that ended just wide. Munxar started to control play and also managed to double the score one minute from half time. William Cassar took advantage of a mis-kick by goalie Mario Agius and placed in goal with a fine lob from the edge of the area. Gharb were dangerous after three minutes of play into the second period but Harry Cassar’s attempt from a melee at Munxar’s goalmouth was cleared off the line by Joseph Agius. The Falcons increased the score one minute later. Gharb’s defenders Hellios Grech hit badly in an attempt to clear a low cross by Mario Azzopardi and committed an unlucky own goal. On 54 minutes Gharb’s goalkeeper Mario Agius was called to save an angled shot by Daniel Pace. The Ran gers replied in the following action through a shot by Clayton Hili that was neutralized by goalie Damien Spiteri. The same goalkeeper was well placed on 56 minutes to save an effort by Christian Farrugia. Three minutes after the hour of play an attempt by Mario Azzopardi was saved with difficulty by goalie Mario Agius. On 65 minutes the same goalkeeper was again called to make a difficult save following another attempt by the Mario Azzopardi. Munxar went again close to scoring on 83 minutes. Substitute Donald Borg entered Gharb’s area with a solo action, dribbled the goalkeeper but had his attempt cleared off the fatal line by Hellios Grech. However, the same Borg sealed the issue three minutes form time when he entered the area in another solo action and placed easily into an open goal. Referee: Pierre Azzopardi |
