XEWKIJA TIGERS MAINTAIN THEIR CHALLENGE

    Xewkija Tigers took revenge for the defeat conceded in the first round against Zebbug Rovers and obtained three important points from a close victory. The points obtained were well deserved. The Tigers were the better side but failed to convert their superiority in more goals. On the other hand the Rovers had a disappointing performance and they only produced a decent reaction in the final stages of the match.

     Xewkija came out more aggressive and were dangerous in the early stages through efforts by Christian Bugeja and Joseph Cefai. The Tigers scored what had to be the decisive goal in the 15^th minute through a strike by Christian Bugeja following a through pass by Michael Pace. Zebbug’s reaction was sterile and their only attempt at Xewkija’s goal arrived in the 35^th minte through a header by Joe Hili from a cross by Basil Chibueze that ended high.

     The Rovers improved their performance after the break but they only managed to share play with their opponents so that play was mainly at the midfield with few scoring opportunities. Zebbug’s goalie Darren pace was called to make a difficult save to turn in corner a free kick by Joseph cefai. From the resultant corner the same goalkeeper kept his side in contention with another good save following a header by Christian Bugeja. Minutes later an attempt by Xewkija’s Joseph Cefai ended just wide. In the 66^th minute Zebbug’s Chibueze entered the area with a personal action but his shot was well saved by goalie Joseph Grima. The same goalkeeper saved the result for his side with a difficult save in the 80^th minute following a free kick by Joseph Cordina.   Referee: George Portelli
