Zebbug Rovers registered their second consecutive win in their match against Gharb rangers and with the three points obtained they are now alone at the third spot on the table.  Zebbug’s win was well deserved as they recovered from an early goal and dominated for the rest of the match.  Zebbug, who had central defender Franco Magrin missing for this match due to an injury, turned the result in their favour just before half time and made sure of the victory with a third goal scored in the final stages.  Gharb had a good start in the match but as time passed by they found it difficult to produce a reaction as their approaches to Zebbug’s area were very rare.

Play was quite balanced in the early stages.  Gharb created the first dangerous action of the match.  On the 2nd minute a shot from outside the area by Gharb’s Christian Farrugia ended wide and the Rovers replied one minute later when a free kick by Sylvan Galea was neutralised by goalie Joel Portelli.  Gharb opened the score on the 4th minute when a corner kick by Roy Vella was not cleared by the defence and Christian Farrugia was at the right place to conclude in goal with an overhead kick.  The Rovers had an immediate reaction and two minutes later Sylvan Galea received a ball at the edge of the area but he concluded weak and goalie Portelli blocked the danger.  The same Galea entered Gharb’s territory in a solo action on 11 minutes but the striker’s attempt ended wide.  Zebbug levelled the score on 17 minute.  Steve Xuereb unmarked Sylvan Galea in the area and the latter placed easily in goal with a low angled shot.  Zebbug maintained the momentum and kept some pressure on their opponents.  Gharb operated mainly with counter attacks but Zebbug’s goalie was not called to make any difficult interventions.  On 38 minutes the Rovers were also unlucky when a shot by Steve Xuereb, who was unmarked in the area by Abdul Mutalib, hit the post and ended wide.  Gharb were dangerous on 42 minutes but a free kick by Christian Farrugia just missed the target.  Zebbug turned the result in their favour in the 45th minute when Abdul Mutalib unmarked Steve Xuereb in the area and the latter fired in goal with a first timer.  Gharb could have levelled the score seconds before the break when he ball bounced in front of goalie Noel Saliba from a free kick by Roy Vella and the goalkeeper turned in corner with some difficulty.

After the break the Rovers kept insisting and on 56 minute they could have increased the score but a direct free kick by Joe Hili hit the crossbar.  Four minutes later Zebbug were again very unlucky when a first timer by Sylvan Galea form a pass by Steve Xuereb hit the post.  On 64 minutes Abdul Mutalib conclude wide from a good position following a pass by Sylvan Galea and four minutes later a long ranged shot by Philip Cardona just missed the target.  On 73 minutes Zebbug’s Sylvan Galea was once again unlucky when his header hit the crossbar.  The Rovers scored their third goal eight minutes from time.  Sylvan Galea entered the area in a solo action but was floored in the area by goalie Joel Portelli.  The referee awarded a penalty and the goalkeeper was sent off so that the same Sylvan Galea converted from the spot kick and made sure of the victory for his side.
