XEWKIJA TIGERS TAKE SOLE LEADERSHIP

     Xewkija Tigers obtained a deserved victory in their top of the table clash against St Lawrence Spurs. With the three points obtained the Tigers opened a three-point lead over the same Spurs and SK Victoria Wanderers, the latter however have a game in hand.

    Xewkija dominated over their opponents during the first period but only managed to take a one-goal lead. After the break the Saints tried to produce a reaction but Xewkija were well organised and controlled play.

    The Saints were forced to defend their area from the early stages. The Tigers were more aggressive and goalie Samuel Micallef had a busy evening.

   In the 12^th minute St. Lawrence’s extreme defender was called to make a difficult save following an effort by Luc Tefogno.

   Xewkija’s supremacy was rewarded in the 17^th minute. Luc Tefogno unmarked Christian Bugeja in the area and the latter placed easily in goal with a low shot.

   Xewkija kept insisting and in the following minutes goalie Micallef kept his side in contention with fine saves following efforts by Mark Camilleri and Christian Bugeja.

    In the 41^st minute a header by the same Bugeja ended over the crossbar while a free kick by Joseph Cefai in the dying moments of the first half just missed the target.

    After the re-start Xewkija were more prudent and kept danger away from their area. They also operated some fine breaks.

    In the 60^th minute they were also unkucky when a strike by Luc Tefogno hit the woodwork. St Lawrence’s best scoring opportunity arrived in the 73^rd minute through a free kick by Jesmond Xerri that was well saved by goalie Joseph Grima.

   The Tigers sealed the issue in the 89^th minute when Joseph Azzopardi doubled the score with a low shot to conclude and inviting through pass by Christian Bugeja.
