Xaghra United recovered from the defeat conceded in their previous match and obtained three points form their match against Zebbug Rovers. It was a deserved win as they dominated over the opponents throughout the ninety minutes. Xaghra had three regular players, Justin Agius, Sam Frank Bajada and Johan Attard, missing for different reasons but still produced a positive performance. The Blues found some difficulties to open the score during the first period but once they opened the score early into the second half they gained confidence and ended up obtaining a convincing win. Zebbug tried to produce a defensive match but their ambitions got complicated as early as the 14th minute when they had a player sent off. The Rovers remained in contention until Xaghra opened the score because they got demoralized and failed to produce a reaction. Xaghra took command of play from the very beginning and after two minutes of play an effort by Eman Bugeja ended wide. Zebbug suffered a setback on 14 minutes when Mario Calleja was sent off for abusive language. Xaghra almost took immediate advantage of the extra player on the field and on the quarter of an hour of play Shaun Sultana headed badly from close distance a cross from the flank by Arthur Farrugia so that goalie Noel Saliba managed to save the danger. On 21 minutes Xaghra’s goalie Matthew Vella had good timing to block on Sylvan Galea following a counter attack. Ten minutes from half time Xaghra were again dangerous but Eman Bugeja headed wide from close distance. Zebbug replied on 43 minutes through a long ranged free kick by Joe Saliba that was neutralized by goalie Matthew Sultana. After the break play Xaghra maintained their territorial supremacy. On 47 minutes an effort by substitute Anthony Bajada ended high. Zebbug replied three minutes later through a header by Sylvan Galea from a free kick by Joe Hili that was saved By goalie Matthew Vella. Xaghra opened the score in the 51st minute. Zebbug’s rearguard failed to clear the danger form the goalmouth and Philip Attard took advantage of the loose ball and fired in goal with a fine strike. Xaghra increased their pressure and doubled the score four minutes later through an excellent shot by substitute Anthony Bajada that surprised goalie Saliba following a pass by Arthur Farrugia. Zebbug’s reply arrived on 63 minutes through an effort by substitute Frank Attard following a cross by Ryan Zammit that hit the woodwork. On 70 minutes Zebbug’s goalie Noel Saliba saved with the aid of the crossbar a header by Josef Galea form a free kick by Philip Attard. Xaghra increased the lead two minutes later through an excellent direct free kick by Joseph Mercieca. In the 78 minute the score became 4-0 for the Blues. Zebbug’s Josmar Farrugia cleared badly a cross by Philip Attard. The ball hit the crossbar and the same Farrugia committed an own goal when he tried to clear off the line form the rebound. Four minutes form time Zebbug’s goalie Saliba saved well an effort by Anthony Saliba. Until the end Xaghra maintained possession and also tried to add more goals to their tally.
