Xaghra United registered the double over Munxar Falcons with an identical score in the first match from the ninth day of the campaign.  Xaghra found it very difficult to win the points at stake as they face a well-organised defense by Munxar that were determined to obtain at least a point from this encounter.

This was undoubtedly a risky approach as Munxar did not have any alternative to create danger to their opponents so that their ambition was over ten minutes from the final whistle.  Xaghra deserved the win and take credit for their persistence as they continued to produce pressure over their opponents until they opened the score.  In the final stages they did not risk anything and controlled their one goal lead.  With the three points obtained Xaghra take sole leadership, with three points more than St Lawrence Spurs, the latter however have a game in hand.

As expected, Xaghra took command of play from the very beginning.  They were unlucky after 50 seconds of play when an attempt from an angled position by Sam Frank Bajada hit the post.  Xaghra kept insisting but Munxar maintained their prudent approach and closed all gaps that led to their area so that goalie Daniel Curmi was not called to make any difficult interventions.  Moreover, Munxar tried to operate some counter attacks but they never tested seriously goalie Matthew Vella.  Xaghra also opted with to take their chance of opening the score through shots from outside the area but they failed to reach the target.  On 22 minutes a free kcik by Eman Bugeja ended just over the crossbar and in another set piece two minutes form the break Josef Galea’s attempt ended just wide.

After the break Xaghra continued to dictate matters but Munxar now became more threatening in their counter breaks.  However, actions at the two goals continued to be quite rare.  Xaghra went very close to scoring on 58 minutes when a header by substitute Donald Galea from a corner kick by Philip Attard was cleared off the fatal line by central defender Marvin Zammit.

One minute after the hour of play a long ranged strike by Michael Bezzina ended just wide.  On 71 minutes a header by Josef Galea from a corner action was neutralized by goalie Daniel Curmi.  The Blues lost a golden scoring opportunity three minutes later when Michael Bezzina won a ball from a melee in Munxar’s are but his strike ended inches wide.  Xaghra were rewarded for their efforts and broke the deadlock on 81 minutes through a fine header by Josef Galea following a free kick from the left flank by Sam Frank Bajada.  Xaghra now took the necessary precautions to defend their lead so that they denied Munxar from producing a reaction until the final whistle.
