St Lawrence Spurs regained co-leadership together with Xaghra United thanks to three hard-earn points from their match against lowly Qala Sat Joseph. The Spurs dominated the match for long stretches but they found it extremely difficult to penetrate Qala’s determined defence so that they only managed to clinch the victory with two goals that arrived late in the match. Qala produced another good defensive performance as they did in their previous match against Xaghra, but ended up suffering a late goal, as happened against Xaghra, to compromise their chances to register their second positive result in the campaign. The Spurs took command from the very beginning and on 10 minutes an effort by Christopher Cauchi hit the side of the net. Eight minutes later a cross-shot from the left by Shaun Muscat was partially saved by goalie Kenny Grima and from the rebound the same goalkeeper recovered his position and turned in corner with difficulty a strike by Mario Cutajar. On 19 minutes the same goalkeeper went up to the edge of the area to clear danger off Jonathan Micallef who was face to face with the goalkeeper and six minutes later a lob by Gothard Conti from a pass by Shaun Muscat ended just over the crossbar. In the 39th minute from a corner kick by Conti a header by Lauran Pisani ended wide and one minute later Jonathan Micallef’s shot form a pass by Christopher Cauchi missed the target. After the break St Lawrence maintained pressure over their opponents and in the 52th minute a shot from outside the area by Mario Cutajar ended wide. Two minutes later a free kick by Lauran Pisani was blocked by the defence but from the rebound the same Pisani saw his shot ended inches from goal. Qala’s goalkeeper Grima was once again called to make a difficult save on 56 minutes following an effort by Jonathan Micallef. As time passed by the Spurs continued to find it difficult to convert their superiority in goals but their efforts were rewarded fifteen minutes from time. A shot by Franklin Grima was turned in corner by goalie Kenny Grima and from the corner kick by Gothard Conti it was the same Franklin Grima who headed in goal from close distance. The Saints continued to be dangerous and in the 79th minute substitute Paul Anthony Attard entered the area from the left flank but his low attempt was blocked by goalie Grima. One minute later it was the other substitute Renzo Formosa who had an effort from a pass by Christopher Cauchi that missed the target and on 84 minutes an attempt by Shaun Muscat ended wide. Two minutes later Qala’ goalie Kenny Grima saved in corner with difficulty a low shot by the same Muscat. St Lawrence sealed the issue with a goal that arrived in the first minute of stoppage time when Christopher Cauchi unmarked Gothard Conti in the area and the latter placed in goal with a low angled shot.
