The clash between the two sides occupying the bottom place on the table, Qala St Joseph and Gharb Rangers, ended in a draw of two goals. The match was quite interesting as each side prevailed over the opponents for a half each. Gharb were the better side during the first period, managed to open the score but failed to increase their lead. The Saints had a good reaction after the break and created some good scoring opportunities. However, they had to wait until the dying seconds to achieve a deserved point from this encounter. The two teams created danger in the early minutes. Gharb had a good opportunity during he first minute of play but a strike by Clayton Hili was well saved by goalie Kenny Grima. Qala replied on the 3rd minute but Christian Portelli concluded badly from a good position. As time passed by Gharb held more of the initiative and play took play mainly within Qala’s half. However, the maroons created the better scoring opportunities. On 11 minutes a strike by Christian Portelli was well saved by goalie John Scerri. The same goalkeeper denied Qala from taking the lead with two consecutive saves on 25 minutes following shots by Christian Portelli and debutant Patrick Falzon. Qala were punished for the missed chances on the half hour when Roy Vella opened the score with his shot directly from a free kick. Gharb were again dangerous six minutes from the break through a shot from outside the area by Christian Farrugia that ended wide. Qala came out more aggressive after the restart and on 53 minutes a header by Patrick Falzon from a corner kick by Dennis Abela was saved by goalie John Scerri. Two minutes later and angled shot by Charlie Attard following a corner action ended just wide. On 63 minutes Gharb’s goalie failed to clear the area from a free kick and from the resultant melee Christian Portelli failed to convert in goal. Qala kept insisting during the remaining minutes but Gharb defended well and kept danger away from their area for most of the time. The Maroons increased pressure in the final stages and in the 90th minute through a shot cross by substitute Lorry Buttigieg that ended just high. Qala’s efforts were rewarded in the third minute of stoppage time when Charlie Attard headed to John Rapa inside the area and the latter placed in goal with a first timer that surprised goalie John Scerri.
