Jonathan Micallef lifts the Spurs to three precious points

    St Lawrence Spurs registered a close victory over Munxar Falcons and reached SK Victoria Wanderers at the top of the table, although he latter have a game in hand. The match was quite interesting as the Spurs were surprised by Munxar’s deployment. The challengers for the title therefore found it more difficult than expected and did not manage to take command of play. The Falcons tried to operate with fast breaks, but St Lawrence defended well and kept pressure away from their area until the final stages of the encounter.

    Play was quite balanced and the two sides produced some good scoring opportunities. In the 13^th minute Munxar’s goalie Adrian Parnis blocked well an effort by Jonathan Micallef who was released in the area by Oliver Farrugia.

    In the 19^th minute a shot by Munxar’s Robert Said was tuned in corner with difficulty by goalie Samuel Micallef and two minutes later the Saints replied with an effort by Renzo Formosa following a corner action that ended just over the crossbar.

    In the 32^nd minute a free kick by Munxar’s Matthew Debrincat ended wide. The Spurs opened the score in the 39^th minute. Munxar’s defence cleared badly a free kick by David Carabott and Jonathan Micallef lobbed in goal from the edge of the area.

    Munxar’s immediate reaction did not produce any danger to the Saints and goalie Parnis was called to make a good save in the 44^th minute following a free kick by David Carabott.

    The Falcons continued to find it difficult to produce danger and the Spurs controlled play without difficulty so that the two goalkeepers were not called to make difficult saves until the final stages of the match.

      In the 77^th minute Munxar’s goalie Parnis saved a free kick by Louis Galea. The Falons replied in the 83^rd minute with a free kick by Chris Debrincat that was saved by goalie Samuel Micallef. Minutes later a long ranged shot by Matthew Debrincat ended just wide. In the dying moments Munxar’s goalie Parnis denied Jesmond Xerri from doubling the score with two saves on separate occasions.
