SK Victoria Wanderers obtained a close victory over Munxar Falcons in their last math of the second round and with the points obtained they are now sharing the top of the table with Xewkija Tigers. The Wanderers had more possession during the match but failed to transform their superiority in goals. They seemed over confident to win full points from this encounter and at the end they risked to loose crucial points in their tussle to win the promotion.
The Wanderers came out more aggressive and kept some pressure over their opponents in the early stages. However, the Falcons recovered as time passed by and created some danger with fast breaks. Victoria’s goalie Marlon Mercieca was called to make two difficult interventions following attempts by Robert Hili and Patrick Falzon. The Wanderers opened the score in the 16th minute through a closed ranged shot by Ajibade Adesina following a corner action. Munxar were not demoralised and minutes later Victoria’s goalie had to run out of his area to clear danger before Robert Said could place into an open goal. In the 35th minute Victoria’s Ige Adesina had a fine header following a cross by Joseph Refalo that just missed the target, and three minutes later the same Adesina had an excellent strike following a corner action deflected in corner by goalie Adrian Parnis. From the resultant corner taken by Joseph Vella, Mark Buttigieg doubled the score with a close ranged header.
Munxar reduced the arrears in the second minute of the second period. Mario Azzopardi was floored in the area by Simon Gatt and Patrick Falzon converted from the spot kick. Victoria regained some territorial command of play and in the 53rd minute Ige Adesina’s header from a cross by Chris Sciortino ended just wide.
Minutes later it was goalie Adrian Parnis who saved with difficulty an effort by Ige Adesina following a move by Ajibade Adesina. In the 60th minute Victoria could have regained their two-goal lead when the referee awarded a penalty for a foul by Shaun Attard on Ige Adesina, but David Udo Monday’s shot from the spot kick hit the post.
Muncxar’s goalie Parnis kept his side in contention in the following minutes with fine saves following attempts by Ige Adesina and Joseph Vella. Munxar’s efforts to save the result were sterile while Victoria could have sealed the issue in the 88th minute when a lob by Joseph Vella ended just wide.
