An early goal scored during the first minute of play paved the way to Munxar Falcons to register a double over Qala St Joseph. With the three points obtained the Falcons consolidated their mid-table position. It was a deserved win for Munxar as they dictated matters and kept their area clear from danger throughout the ninety minutes. Qala once again had a positive approach to the match and seem determined to recover their position on the table. However, they still lack some power in attack as they fail to turn their manoeuvre in dangerous scoring opportunities. The Falcons had an excellent start. After just 20 seconds of play Qala’s goalie Kenny Grima turned in corner a shot by Daniel Pace and from the resultant corner, Anthony Camilleri headed in goal from close distance. Munxar were now in the driving seat and controlled their one goal lead with authority. Qala’s reaction was sterile, mainly because Munxar’s rearguard was well deployed. In the final stages of the first half Munxar could have doubled their lead. On 32 minutes Mario Azzopardi entered the area in a solo action but defender Ivan Grech recovered in time to clear in corner. Seven minutes from half time a cross by veteran Joseph Calleja arrived to an unmarked Daniel Pace but the latter concluded wide from an ideal position. After the resumption Munxar increased their pressure over their opponents. On 53 minutes a low shot by Mario Azzopardi following a solo action was well saved by goalie Kenny Grima and five minutes later a strike by Joe Agius from a pass by Anthony Camilleri ended just over the crossbar. On 62 minutes a shot from outside the area by Joseph Mizzi hit the crossbar and from the rebound Anthony Camilleri incredibly concluded wide with an open goal at his mercy. Six minutes later Munxar’s Mario Azzopardi failed to conclude from close distance following an inviting cross by Joseph Cordina. On 70 minutes goalie Kenny Grima was called to make a difficult save following an effort by Joseph Cordina form a cross by Mario Azzopardi. Munxar doubled the score on 72 minutes. Qala’s rearguard failed to clear a direct free kick by Joe Agius and Anthony Camilleri netted easily from close distance. One minute later an effort by Daniel Pace from a pass by Mario Azzopardi ended inches wide. Munxar’s substitute Christian Micallef went close to increase the lead on two separate occasions around the half hour of pay of the second period. In the first occasion Micallef had his shot saved in two attempts by the goalkeeper while he concluded over the crossbar on the second occasion. In the first minute of stoppage time an effort by Daniel Pace was cleared off the line by Qala’s Charlie Attard with the goalkeeper beaten. Referee: Joe Agius |
