Oratory Youths registered a double over Gharb Rangers and with the points obtained they re-opened their chances to challenge fore the third spot on the table. It was a deserved win for the Youths. They dominated the match for long stretches and Gharb only managed to produce a reaction when the result was already compromised. Oratory opened a three-goal lead during the first period and sealed the issue with a fourth goal scored midway through the second period. The two sides had a number a regular players missing due to different reasons. The Youths took command of play from the very beginning and in the early stages Dione Lautier took advantage of a back pass by Gharb’s rearguard, but his final shot was blocked by goalie John Scerri. Oratory opened the score in the 10th minute. Francesco Cini unmarked George Caruana in the area and the latter placed easily in goal from close distance. Gharb failed to produce a reaction and Oratory continued to produce pressure. On 17 minutes a long ranged shot by Alex Sacco missed the target. However, the Youths doubled the score on 31 minutes when Dione Lautier received a ball from a free kick by Francesco Cini and headed in goal from close distance. Two minutes later Cini entered the area in a fast break. He released Lautier in the area but Helios Grech recovered and cleared in corner. Six minutes from half time it was George Caruana who entered the area from the left flank but his close ranged attempt was blocked in corner. Oratory increased their lead one minute from half time. Marvin Grech released Dione Lautier in Gharb’s area, the latter dribbled the goalkeeper and deposited into an empty goal. After the break Oratory maintained their superiority and on 52 minutes an angled shot by Alex Sacco was blocked by goalie John Scerri. One minute later Oratory’s Chris Attard entered the area but from his pass Dione Lautier concluded badly from an ideal position On the hour of play a free kick by Francesco Cini ended wide. Oratory scored their fourth goal on 66 minutes. A close ranged attempt by Lautier form a free kick by George Frank Mizzi was blocked by the defense and from the rebound the same Lautier crossed to the centre and Chris Attard headed in goal from close distance. Gharb produced their best patch of play in the last quarter of the match. On 68 minutes an angled shot by Christian Farrugia ended wide and minutes later Harry Cassar had an attempt from a clearance by Oratory’s rearguard that ended over the crossbar. In the 71st minute an effort by Clayton Hili was neutralized by goalie Elliot Fenech without difficulty. The same goalkeeper was called to make a good save on 74 minutes following a long ranged strike by Roy Vella. The same Vella had a good free kick four minutes later that was saved by goalie Fenech. Oratory could have added another goal to their tally on 86 minutes but an attempt by substitute Derek Bugeja from a pass by Dione Lautier was blocked in time by the defense. Referee: Reno Refalo |
