St Lawrence Spurs failed to reach leaders Xaghra United in their match from the 10th day of the campaign against Zebbug Rovers as they only managed to gain a point, which leaves them two points behind the same Xaghra.  The Spurs were determined to take revenge for the defeat conceded against Zebbug in the first round but in this match Zebbug were as much determined to extend their positive run that started at the beginning of the second round.  Although the match was played in difficult weather conditions the two teams produced an interesting encounter where the final score remained uncertain until the final whistle.  The final score was therefore just as victory could have gone either way.

The Spurs tried to put pressure over their opponents from the very beginning and in the 2nd minute Gothard Conti entered the area but defender Gabriel Sillato recovered his position and cleared the danger.  The Rovers replied one minute later through a good move by Sylvan Galea but from his cross Abdul Mutalib’s header was weak and goalie Samuel Micallef saved the danger.  On the quarter of hour St Lawrence lost a golden scoring opportunity when the referee awarded a penalty for a foul by Philip Cardona on Gothard Conti but the same Conti saw his shot form the spot kick ending wide.  On 17 minutes an attempt by Shaun Attard after receiving from Paul Anthony Attard missed the target.  The Rovers continued to defend their territory with determination and on 24 minutes they were also dangerous in a fast break by Josmar Farrugia but Sylvan Galea missed the ball from a good position.  One minute later Zebbug’s goalie Noel Saliba was well placed to save a header by Christopher Cauchi from a cross by Jonathan Micallef.  The Rovers gained confidence and on the half hour skipper Franco Magrin had a direct free kick that was turned in corner with difficulty by goalie Samuel Micallef.  In the first minute of stoppage time before the break Zebbug were again dangerous through a shot by Abdul Mutalib that ended wide.

The Saints had a better start for the second period and on 48 minutes a low shot by Paul Anthony Attard following a melee in the area from a corner action was not connected by any striker.  The Spurs opened the score on 52 minutes through a long ranged free kick by Mario Cutajar that surprised goalie Noel Saliba.  The Rovers had an immediate reaction and their efforts were rewarded on 67 minutes.  A corner kick by Abdul Mutalib was not cleared by the defense and Abdul Mutalib took the loose ball and netted from close distance.  Play now became more interesting and as time passed by the two sides increased their efforts to take the lead.  On 72 minutes Zebbug’s Sylvan Galea had a shot following a fast break that ended wide and nine minutes later Shaun Muscat failed to connect to an inviting pass by Gothard Conti.  Five minutes from time a shot by Sylvan Galea from a pass by Mutalib ended wide and one minute later Zebbug’s goalie Saliba saved well a shot form outside the area by Mario Cutajar.  The same goalkeeper was again called to make a difficult intervention on 88 minutes following another attempt by Cutajar.  St Lawrence lost the last opportunity to score a dramatic goal in the first minute of stoppage time but Jonathan Micallef’s low shot was neutralized by goalie Noel Saliba.
