Zebbug Rovers defeated Qala St Joseph in their opening match of the second round of the campaign so that the former increased their lead over their opponents on the table.  The match was typical of an encounter between two balanced sides which was eventually decided with a goal scored following some hesitation by Qala’s inexperienced rearguard.  The Saints were the better side during the first period but failed to convert their superiority into goal scoring opportunities.  On the other hand the Rovers controlled play, and operated with counter attacks as soon as they scored the goal that decided the issue in the early stages of the second half.

Play was balanced during the first minutes of the match but as time passed by the Maroons gained territorial supremacy.  However, they found it difficult to created good scoring opportunities and they were only dangerous through strikes from outside the area.  In the 15th minute Dennis Abela had a good shot that was deflected in corner and the same player had another effort on 35 minutes that missed the target.  Four minutes from half time it was Zebbug’s substitute goalkeeper Noel Saliba who neutralized a low shot from long distance by Daniel Cutajar.

The Saints were surprised after five minutes of play into the second period as Zebbug’s Abdul Mutalib entered between two defenders following a through pass from the midfield and placed in goal with a low shot to put his side in the lead.   Qala replied three minutes later when substitute Michael Tabone came face to face with the goalkeeper but the striker had his shot blocked in corner.  The Rovers could have doubled the score on 65 minutes but Steve Xuereb’s shot from a good position ended wide.  Qala’s reaction continued to be sterile while Zebbug operated with counter attacks.

On 79 minutes the Rovers were also dangerous through an angled shot by Sylvan Galea that ended wide.  The same Galea once again missed the target four minutes later following a cross from the right flank by Michael Pace.   Until the end the Rovers maintained control of play to defend their one-goal lead.
