Xaghra United registered the double over Oratory Youths and extended their winning march to consolidate leadership. Although Xaghra had the better chances throughout the match they failed to put their minds at rest at an early stage during the match so that their opponents remained practically in contention until the final stages. However, the Blues continued to put pressure on their rivals St Lawrence Spurs prior to the direct clash in the next day of the campaign. Oratory had a positive performance. They tried to recover from the disappointing defeat conceded in their previous match, produced a good resistance to the more quoted opponents and could have obtained an unexpected point with some confidence especially during the second period. Oratory’s goalkeeper Franklin Vella denied Xaghra from scoring an early when he blocked an effort by Joseph Bartolo from a solo action in the 5th minute. Two minutes later Oratory replied with an attempt by Dione Lautier that ended just wide. On 11 minutes a free kick by Xaghra’s Joseph Bartolo missed the target. As time passed by Xaghra increased pressure and their efforts were rewarded on 20 minutes when Shaun Sultana took advantage of a melee at Oratory’s goalmouth to place easily into an open goal from close distance. Just before the half hour of play Xaghra were again dangerous through a header by Josef Galea form a free kick by Joseph Bartolo that was well saved by goalie Franklin Vella. On 35 minutes a direct free kick by Xaghra’s Joseph Bartolo ended wide and Oratory could have levelled the score two minutes form the break but goalie Matthew Vella went up to the edge of the area to block oh Joseph Grech. After the restart Oratory tried to produce a reaction but Xaghra continued to be more dangerous. On 47 minutes Shaun Sultana dribbled his direct opponent in the area but his low shot was blocked by goalie Franklin Vella. One minute later and effort by Philip Attard from outside the area ended over the crossbar. On the hour of play Oratory’s rearguard failed to clear danger, Shaun Sultana took the loose ball but his low shot ended just wide. One minute later an attempt by Michael Bezzina from a pass by Johann Attard ended wide and on 63 minutes Oratory had their best opportunity to level the score but a header by Dione Lautier form a cross by Marvin Grech ended over the crossbar. Four minutes later Xaghra’s Shaun Sultana failed to connect to an inviting pass by Johann Attard and from the resultant counter attack an effort by Dione Lautier ended wide. On 77 minutes Xaghra’s Michael Bezzina had a good shot that ended on the side of the net and on the 90th minute Oratory’s goalkeeper Franklin Vella denied substitute Donald Galea from scoring the second goal with a fine save.
