Xaghra United started the second round on an excellent note and registered a convincing win over bottom placed Gharb Rangers.  The Blues came out determined for the match and practically made sure of the three points with goals scored during the first quarter of the match.  They continued to dictate matters for the rest of the match and the score could have been with a larger margin but the strikers were often erratic in their finishing.  Gharb found it very difficult to resist Xaghra’s pressure.  They recovered from the difficult start that compromised the result and managed to keep the score as respectable as possible.

In the first minute of play Xaghra’s Michael Bezzina concluded wide after receiving from Eman Bugeja.  Xaghra opened the score in the 2nd minute of play.  Michael Bezzina crossed from the left and Philip Attard was well placed to guide the ball in goal from close distance.  Three minutes later a low shot by the same Attard following a corner action was cleared off the line by Roy Vella.  The Blues doubled the score on 13 minute through a cross shot by Michael Bezzina that surprised goalie John Scerri and six minutes later Mark Buhagiar increased the lead with a good shot to conclude a move by Michael Bezzina.  On 21 minutes Gharb’s goalie John Scerri was called to make a difficult save to block an effort by Joseph Bartolo.  Gharb replied in the 27th minute through a long ranged shot by Roy Vella that just missed the target.  Xaghra kept insisting and in the following minutes Daniel Bartolo had two attempts from ideal position on separate occasions that ended wide.  Ten minutes from the break an angled shot by Michael Bezzina hit the side of the net and in the 38th minute Xaghra’s goalie Matthew Vella was well placed to neutralize a long ranged shot by Owen Formosa.  Xaghra were again dangerous in the 43rd minute through a shot by Eman Bugeja that was blocked by goalie John Scerri.

After the resumption Xaghra continued to dictate matters and in the 50th minute an angled low shot by Eman Bugeja ended inches wide.

Five minutes later a shot by Michael Bezzina following a corner action ended just wide.  On the hour of play Michael Bezzina entered the area from the left flank but his low shot was deflected by goalie John Scerri and substitute Arthur Farrugia concluded high form an ideal position. Gharb reduced the score on 66 minutes.  Christian Farrugia released Clayton Hili in Xaghra’s territory and the latter lobbed over goalie Matthew Vella who went out of his area in an attempt to block the danger.   Xaghra were dangerous minutes later through a header by Johann Attard from a corner action that was saved by goalie John Scerri and on 78 minutes substitute Shaun Sultana had an angled shot that was cleared off the line by Gharb’s substitute Anthony Mercieca. One minute later goalie Scerri saved in corner a strike from outside the area by Mark Buhagiar.  Five minutes from time Gharb could have scored the second goal but a header by Clayton Hili from a corner kick by Roy Vella was saved by goalie Matthew Vella.  For the remaining minutes Xaghra continued to administer play and defended their two goal lead with authority.
