St Lawrence Spurs obtained a hard-earned win over Munxar Falcons in the first match from the second round and with the points obtained they maintained leadership.  This was an important match for the two sides since the Falcons were aiming for the three points to reach the same Spurs on the table.

It was a contested match with few open score chances on either side so that a draw could have been a just result.  However, the Spurs managed to find additional determination in the final stages and although they had a player less on the field they managed to score the decisive goal during stoppage time.

St Lawrence had a better start and could have opened the score in the first minute of play.

Christopher Cauchi received a ball from a throw in and from his pass Gothard Conti’s shot hit the crossbar.  The Spurs kept insisting but the Falcons were well deployed and kept their area clear of danger.  Munxar operated with counter attacks and in the 24th minute Daniel Pace unmarked Shaun Attard but the latter had his shot blocked by the defense.

From the rebound Daniel Pace had his attempt well saved by goalie Samuel Micallef.  One minute later the Saints replied with a cross by Gothard Conti that was deflected by Joseph Agius but goalie Daniel Curmi was well placed and managed to neutralize the danger.

In the 27th minute Shaun Muscat failed to conclude at Munxar’s goal when he was in an ideal position following a free kick.  Munar lost another good scoring opportunity five minutes from the break when Daniel Pace once again released Shaun Attard in the area but the latter hesitated and St Lawrence’s rearguard cleared the danger.

The Falcons saw more of the ball during the second period.  In the 47th minute St Lawrence’s Daniel Micallef cleared in time with a fine tackle following a fast break by Shaun Attard and in the following action goalie Samuel Micallef managed to clear the ball from the area before Daniel Pace could conclude form close distance.  Play continued to be contested in the midfield as the Falcons pressed more in an attempt to create danger while the Spurs tried to surprise their opponents with counter breaks.  On 69 minutes the Spurs were dangerous through a personal action by Paul Anthony Attard who dribbled three defenders but had his angled shot well saved by goalie Daniel Curmi.  Nine minutes later Munxar’s rearguard was once again exposed but Jonathan Micallef failed to connect for an inviting cross by Conti.  Four minutes from time the Saints ended with a player less on the field when Stefan Sultana was sent off for a second bookable offence.  In the following action goalie Samuel Micallef made a good save following a header by Anthony Camilleri.  The Spurs were not demoralized and in the final stages they increased their efforts to win all the points at stake.  The Spurs were rewarded as they managed to score the goal that decided the issue in the first minute of stoppage time through a strike by Shaun Muscat from an angled position.  Two minutes later the Saints could have sealed the issue but a header by Jonathan Micallef from a cross by Shaun Muscat ended wide.
