St Lawrence Spurs obtained an easy win over neighbours Gharb Rangers to consolidate their leadership on the table.  The Saints dominated over their opponents for long stretches and the win could have easily been with a larger margin but the strikers were not sharp in their finishing.  Gharb tried to apply a defensive deployment but still committed some mistakes that compromised their chances to win at least a point from this encounter.

The Spurs took command of play from the very beginning but they were apparently overconfident in the initial stages as they found it difficult to create danger.  In the 5th minute a shot by Shaun Muscat from a cross by Gothard Conti was cleared by goalie John Scerri.  The Rangers replied on 11 minutes through a header by Christian Farrugia from a cross by David Xerri that missed the target.  The Saints opened the score on 20 minutes.  Shaun Muscat unmarked Franklin Grima in the area an the latter netted with a good shot.

The Saints were again dangerous just after the half hour of play but Gothard Conti’s header from a cross by Shaun Muscat was well saved by the goalkeeper.  In another occasion a strike by Mario Cutajar missed the target and in the 37th minute Gharb’s Clayton Hili had a goal following a fast break disallowed for an offside infringement.  Three minutes later Jonathan Micallef entered Gharb’s area with a solo action but had his shot blocked by the defence.  From the rebound Renzo Formosa guided the ball into the net but the goal was disallowed for an offside infringement by the same player. Gharb could have levelled the score three minutes from the break but a strike by Clayton Hili missed the target.

After the resumption St Lawrence came out determined to secure the victory.  After just 15 seconds of play Shaun Muscat won a ball at the edge of Gharb’s area but his shot ended inches wide.

In the 48th minute Gothard Conti failed to connect to an inviting pass following a free kick by Mario Cutajar and one minute later Paul Anthony Attard concluded wide from an ideal position.  The spurs doubled the score in the 52nd minute through an angled shot by Jonathan Micallef following a personal action.

Five minutes later a low shot by Gothard Conti hit the base of the post and on the hour of play a low shot by Shaun Muscat following a solo action ended just wide.  The Spurs made sure of the three points in the 68th minute through a direct free kick by Mario Cutajar.  The Spurs reduced their pressure and Gharb tried to reduce the arrears.  However, the closest Gharb went to score a consolation goal was on 78 minutes when Andrew Said had a shot following a melee in the area that was well saved by goalie Samuel Micallef.
