Munxar Falcons won the direct clash for the third spot on the table against Zebbug Rovers to confirm their excellent run in the campaign. The victory for Munxar matured with three goals scored during the first quarter of the match, so that they administered play for the rest of the encounter. Munxar’s goalie was also among the protagonists with some difficult saves that denied the Rovers from re-opened the issue. This was Munxar’s second win over Zebbug in the campaign. The Rovers had a disappointing performance. They had a timid approach and only managed to show some sign of reaction when the result was compromised. The Falcons took command of play from the beginning and opened the score on the 8th minute through a direct free kick by Joseph Cordina. Zebbug failed to produce an immediate reaction and Munxar continued to dictate matters. The Falcons doubled the score five minutes later. Joseph Calleja entered the area and fired in goal from close distance. On 23 minutes Munxar increased their lead. Joseph Calleja unmarked Joseph Mizzi in Zebbug’s area and the latter placed easily in goal with a low shot. Zebbug only managed to be dangerous near the end of the first half when Franco Magrin came face to face with the goalkeeper and the latter defelcted in corner. Munxar’s goalie continued to be the protagonist in the first part of the second period. On 54 minutes Daniel Curmi saved with difficulty an effort by Sylvan Galea and four minutes later the same goalkeeper was called to make another good save following another attempt by Galea. On 62 minutes the Rovers were awarded a penalty for a foul by Pierre Said on Josmar Farrugia but Sylvan Galea’s shot from the spot kick was again saved by goalie Daniel Curmi. Munxar replied on 64 minutes with a long ranged attempt by Christian Micallef that ended just high and four minutes later Munxar’s goalie denied Steve Xuereb from reducing the score with another difficult intervention. Zebbug lost a good scoring opportunity on 74 minutes when Franco Magrin incredibly headed high from close distance following a free kick by substitute Chris Gafa. One minute later Munxar scored their fourth goal. Christian Micallef entered the area from the right flank and from his low pass Mario Azzopardi guided the ball into an empty goal. Zebbug were now demoralised and Munxar dominated the remaining minutes of the match. Four minutes from time the Falcons went close to scoring but a direct free kick by substitute Matthew Debrincat was turned in corner by goalie Noel Saliba. Zebbug scored their consolation goal on the 90th minute through a tap-in by Sylvan Galea following a fast break by substitute Chris Gafa. Referee: Reno Refalo |
