Oratory Youths obtained an important win over Munxar Falcons and increased their possibility to be among the challengers for the honours. The match was well contested as both Munxar and Oratory were determined to win points from this match. Munxar needed a win to reduce their gap from the leaders and tried to put some pressure over their opponents. However, they found it difficult to penetrate Oratory’s rearguard and were also erratic in their finishing. Oratory, who had Marvin Grech. George Frank Mizzi and Francesco Cini missing for this match; had a prudent approach. They protected their area and operated with effective counter breaks especially through Dinoe Lautier. The Youths opened the score during the first period and doubled their lead midway through the second so that at the end they earned a deserved win. The Falcons came out more aggressive and went close to score an early goal. After just 20 seconds of play Daniel Pace entered Oratory’s area but form his pass Joseph Mizzi concluded badly from a good position. Oratory operated with counter breaks and on 9 minutes an effort by Dione Lautier was blocked by central defender Pierre Said. In following action an effort by Oratory’s Joseph Grech was also blocked by the rearguard. In the 11th minute a free kick by Munxar’s Matthew Debrincat was turned in corner with difficulty by goalie Franklin Vella and one minute later a header by Anthony Camilleri ended just wide from Oratory’s goal. The Falcons were again dangerous on 26 minutes but Joseph Mizzi headed wide from a good position an inviting cross by Mario Azzopardi. Oratory opened the score one minute after the half hour of play. Dione Lautier entered the area following a through pass by George Louis Zammit and placed in goal with a low shot as goalie Curmi went out in an attempt to block the danger. Munxar’s immediate reaction was sterile and Oratory could have doubled the score on 35 minutes when a cross from the left flank arrived to an unmarked Dione Lautier, but the latter hit weak and goalie Daniel Curmi saved without difficulty. Seven minutes from the break the Falcons had their best opportunity to level the score. Joseph Mizzi entered the area with a personal action, dribbled the goalkeeper but had his attempt blocked in corner by Joshua Cassar. One minute later it was Munxar’s goalkeeper Curmi who blocked an effort b y Dione Lautier following a personal action. Lautier was again dangerous seconds from half time but his shot from just outside the area was neutralized by goalie Curmi. After the restart the Falcons increased their effort in an attempt to level the score and produced some pressure over their opponent’s rearguard. On 56 minutes they were also dangerous through a header by Mario Azzopardi from a cross by substitute Shaun Attard that ended high. The Youths resisted well to Munxar’s pressure and managed to double the score on 64 minutes. It was Alex Sacco who defended a ball within the area, unmarked substitute Adrian Farrugia, who was on the pitch for a few seconds, and the latter placed at the lower corner of the net with a low shot. Munxar were shocked while the Youths gained confidence and started to administer play with authority. Oratory could have increased their lead on 71 minutes when Dione Lautier was tackled in the area following a personal action but the ball arrived to an unmarked Adrian Farrugia who failed to conclude from a good position. Munxar replied on 76 minutes through a strike by Daniel Pace that was saved in two attempts by goalie Franklin Vella. The same goalkeeper denied Munxar from re-opening the issue on the 90th minute when he turned in corner with difficulty a shot-cross by substitute Joseph Borg. Referee: George Portelli |
