Zebbug Rovers obtained their second consecutive victory in the campaign when they surprised the more quoted St Lawrence Spurs.  The latter were coming from three consecutive victories and were aiming to keep close to leaders Xaghra.  However, they were probably over confident for this match so that they suffered from Zebbug’s determination.  It was a deserved win for Zebbug.  They were very prudent during the first part of the match but administered play as soon as they opened the score.  The Rovers could have made sure at an earlier stage of the match so that they had to suffer in the final stages as the Saints increased their pressure.

For this match St Lawrence had Jonathan Micallef and Christopher Cauchi missing due to injuries.  Zebbug’s striker Sylvan Galea was once again missing from the starting line-up but was among the substitutes after an injury.

St Lawrence saw more of the ball during the first period and tried to put some pressure over their opponents.  However, the Rovers were well deployed at their rearguard and protected their area so that the Spurs found it extremely difficult to create danger.  On the other hand Zebbug operated with counter attacks but goailie Micallef was not called to make any difficult intervention.  The best scoring opportunity of the first half arrived on 31 minutes by St Lawrence.  Paul Anthony Attard entered Zebbug’s territory with a solo action but goalie George Vella remained calm and blocked the danger in two attempts.

The Rover came out very aggressive after the break and opened the score after only two minutes of play through an angled shot by Steve Xuereb that surprised goalie Samuel Micallef.  However, Zebbug suffered a set-back on 52 minutes when the referee sent Franco Magrin for an early shower for a foul on Mario Cutajar.  The Spurs tried to get out of their area in an attempt to recover the deficit but they left some gaps at their defense with the result that Zebbug were more dangerous with fast breaks.

On 64 minutes Zebbug were dangerous through a long ranged free kick by Joe Hili that was neutralized by goalie Micallef. Four minutes later Zebbug’s Steve Xuereb came face to face with the goalkeeper following a through pass from the midfield but the striker incredibly concluded badly.  In the 72nd minute goalie Micallef cleared a cross by Mutalib from the right flank and from Josmar Farrugia’s shot Gabriel Sillato saw his close ranged attempt blocked at St Lawrence’s goalmouth in corner.  The Saints regained composure in an attempt to produce a final assault on their opponents.  In the 77th minute a close ranged attempt by Gothard Conti from a free kick by Lauran Pisnai was turned in corner by goalie Vella.  From the resultant melee due to protests for an alleged foul on the goalkeeper, the Saints had Renzo Formosa sent off for retaliation on the same goalkeeper and from the same corner kick a shot from outside the area by Mario Cutajar was saved by Zebbug’s goalkeeper.  The Spurs increased their pressure and in the 84th minute an effort by Lauran Pisani from a corner action was well saved by goalie Vella.  Less than one minute later Shaun Muscat entered Zebbug’s area with a solo action but hesitated to conclude so that his final attempt was weak and goalie George Vella managed to block in time.
