Main contenders for promotion and KO winners Qala St Joseph started the campaign on a good note and obtained full points from a victory over Zebbug Rovers. The points were obtained with the least possible effort as the Saints failed to impress in their first match of the championship. However, it was a deserved win as they produced more scoring opportunities than their opponents and managed to control play when they had a player less on the field. On the other hand Zebbug seemed motivated and tried hard to earn at least a point form this difficult encounter. They were weak in attack and failed to convert their play into scoring opportunities.
Qala had a better start. They held command at the midfield and were more adventurous. The maroons opened the score on 21 minutes through a direct free kick converted by Mario Mifsud. The Rovers had a good reaction. They went out of their defense and as time passed by they kept the ball within their opponent’s territory. However, they found some difficulties to create danger and the only went close to scoring on 43 minutes through an effort by Sylvan Galea that ended wide.
Play became more balanced after the break. In the 46th minute Peter Said headed a corner kick by Joe Xerri but Christian Portelli’s shot missed the target. Three minutes later Qala’s goalkeeper Kenny Grima denied the Rovers from leveling the score when he deflected on the crossbar with difficulty a first timer by Josmar Farrugia following a cross by Chris Gafa. The Saints suffered a setback in the 54th minute when the referee sent Christian Portelli for an early shower for remarks to the referee. However, Zebbug did not take immediate advantage and Qala were dangerous in the following minutes through an effort by Peter Said that ended wide and a long ranged shot by Mark Bonello that was blocked by goalie George Vella. The Rovers increased their efforts in an attempt to recover the deficit, going close to scoring on 77 minutes through a header by Josmar Farrugia from a free kick by Sylvan Galea. Five minutes later Qala were dangerous through a long ranged strike by Mark Bonello was saved in corner with difficulty by goalie George Vella. The Saints made sure of the victory with a goal scored three minutes form time by Peter Said, who entered the area and placed in goal with a low shot. Referee: Joe Agius |
