Oratory Youths obtained an important win in the last match of the first round against Qala St Joseph and with the three points obtained they move closer to the top positions. Oratory’s win matured with two goals scored during the first period and although they suffered a comeback from the Saints after the break they managed to control play and defend the one goal lead until the final whistle. The Maroons had another difficult match. They suffered Oratory’s pressure during the first period and re-opened their chances to save the result early in the second half. However, they lost composure as time passed by and their efforts in the final stages were to no avail. The match was conditioned by strong winds and Oratory took immediate advantage. The produced pressure on Qala’s rearguard and in the 5th minute central defender John Rapa made a good intervention to clear in corner an effort by Joseph Grech. The Youths opened the score two minutes later. Qala’s defence failed to clear a corner kick by Francesco Cini and Dione Lautier came from the second post to push the ball in goal. The Youths kept insisting and on 17 minutes Lautier had a good effort from a through pass by Francesco Cini blocked by goalie Kenny Grima. In the 25th minute Oratory’s Joseph Grech had a shot following a pass by Lautier that ended just wide and two minutes later a shot on the run by Lautier missed the target. In the 33rd minute Joseph Grech released George Caruana in Qala’s area but the latter saw his low shot neutralised by goalie Kenny Grima. The Youths doubled the score three minutes from the break. Andrew Zammit unmarked Marvin Grech and the latter placed in goal with a low shot as goalie Grima went out of his goal in an attempt to block the danger. Seconds from half time, a low shot by Lautier was well saved by goalie Grima. |

The Maroons tried to re-open the issue from the initial stages of the second period. They were also dangerous after only fifteen seconds of play when Charlie Attard came face to face with Oratory’s goalkeeper but the latter maintained his position and saved his goal. However, the Saints reduced the arrears before the stroke of the first minute of play of the second half when John Rapa netted from close distance following a melee in Oratory’s area. The Saints were again dangerous in the 49th minute through a strike by Christian Portelli that was saved by goalie Franklin Vella. The Youths recovered from the difficult stage and in the 56th minute they went close to scoring through a header by Joshua Cassar from a corner action that was saved by goalie Kenny Grima. Qala were again dangerous on 69 minutes through a direct free kick by Daniel Cutajar that ended just wide. In the 74th minute the maroons had their best scoring opportunity but Michael Tabone’s shot following a free kick by Denis Abela ended high. Oratory maintained composure in the final stages and managed to keep danger away from their area until the end of the match. Referee: Joe Agius |
