Munxar Falcons obtained an important win over the more quoted Qala St. Joseph and moved away from the lower part of the table. It was a deserved win, especially when considering that the Falcons produced better play and seemed more determined to win the points at stake. The two teams had the same points on the table prior to this match and both needed a victory to reduce their gap from the top positions. For this match Munxar had to play without the service of Joseph Cordina due to suspension while Qala had Glenn Cefai and Christian Portelli missing, the former due to an injury and the latter due to suspension. This was Qala’s third consecutive defeat for the Maroons. Munxar seemed more aggressive and held the initiative for long stretches. However, Qala resisted well and operated with counter breaks. The Saints created the first scoring opportunity of the match on 18 minutes but a shot from outside the area by Michael Tabone ended just wide. Four minutes later the Falcons replied with an angled shot by Christian Micallef that was neutralized by goalie Kenny Grima. Munxar had a goal by Pierre Said disallowed for an offside position on 28 minutes and ten minutes form half time a free kick by Qala’s Mario Mifsud missed the target. After the resumption Munxar continued to be in a better shape and in the 47th minute another goal by Christian Micallef was disallowed for an offside infringement. Qala replied in the 53rd minute through a first timer by Joe Xerri from a cross by Nathan Portelli that was blocked by goalie Daniel Curmi. Qala’s goalie Grima denied Munxar from opening the score when he deflected in corner a good effort by Christian Micallef following a solo action. The same goalkeeper was once again called to make a difficult save on 72 minutes following a header by Mario Azzopardi from a cross by Joseph Calleja. The Maroons replied six minutes later through a long ranged shot by Michael Tabone that was saved by goalie Curmi. |

Munxar scored the goal that decided the issue four minutes from time. The referee awarded a penalty when substitute Jonathan Bajada floored Munxar’s substitute William Cassar and Joseph Mizzi, who was also a substitute in this match, converted from the spot kick. Two minutes later the Saints were reduced to ten players when Jonathan Bajada was sent off for dissent. One minute later Munxar’s other substitute Joseph Mizzi could have sealed the issue but he incredibly failed to take advantage from a blunder at Qala’s rearguard Referee: Reno Refalo |
