Zebbug Rovers obtained their first points in the championship with a convincing win over Gharb Rangers.  This was a clash between two teams who were both without a point prior to this match and were therefore aiming to avoid the bottom place on the table.  Zebbug’s victory was well deserved.  They had an excellent start and paved the way to win the points at stake with three goals scored during the first quarter of an hour of play.  Gharb’s reaction arrived after the break but the result was already compromised and they only went close to re-open the issue when it was too late in the match.

The Rovers opened the score in the 5th minute through a tap-in by Abdul Mutalib following an inviting cross by Philip Cardona.  Gharb were shocked and two minutes later Chris Gafa doubled the score with a close ranged header following a cross from the right flank by Mutalib.  The Rangers replied with an attempt by Jonathan Apap from a corner kick by Roy Vella that ended just high.  The score became 3-0 on 16 minutes.  Chris Gafa was released in Gharb’s area with a through pass by Mutalib and the former registered a personal brace with a low angled shot.  On 25 minute an effort by Charles Cini ended just wide and minutes later Gharb’s goalie John Scerri blocked a good shot by Mutalib.  Skipper Franco Magrin increased the score for the Rovers in the 31st minutes when he escaped the offside trap and placed easily in goal with a low shot.

Gharb had a good reaction after the break and score two goals which gave them an opportunity to regain some confidence.  Roy Vella reduced the deficit in the 49th minute when he guided in goal from close distance an inviting pass by Roberto Sacco and the same Vella scored the second goal two minutes later directly from a free kick.  However, Zebbug regained composure and managed to keep control of play.  In the 80th minute they also had a good opportunity to increase the lead but a direct free kick by Joe Hili was well saved by goalie John Scerri.

Gharb replied with an attempt by substitute David Xerri that ended wide.  Gharb’s best opportunity to re-open the issue arrived three minutes from time when a strike by Jonathan Apap following a personal action hit the crossbar and from the rebound substitute Clayton Hili incredibly concluded high.
