St Lawrence Spurs registered their second consecutive win in the campaign from their derby match against Gharb Rangers. It was a deserved win for the Saints as they dominated the match. They opened a two goal lead during the first period and secured the points with three more goals in the final stages of the encounter. In this match St Lawrence confirmed the validity of their squad and one expects that they will be among the challengers for the honours together with Xaghra United and Qala St. Joseph. On the other hand this was Gharb’s second consecutive defeat with a large score. They suffered most during the first period and ended up compromising their chances to win something from this match.
The Saints had an excellent start and opened the score in the 2nd minute through player coach Gothard Conti. However, the Rangers managed to level the score two minutes later. St. Lawrence’s Daniel Micallef tried to clear danger from a melee in the area, but the defender hit badly and committed an own goal. The Spurs regained composure and produced pressure over Gharb’s rearguard. In the 9th minute a goal by Conti was disallowed for an offside infringement. However, St. Lawrence took the lead for the second time on 15 minutes through a lob by Christopher Cauchi that found goalie Scerri unprepared and out of his position. Gharb continued to suffer pressure and three minutes later Jonathon Apap took advantage of a wrong clearance but his header ended wide. In the 25th minute a header by Christopher Cauchi from a corner kick by Jonathan Micallef ended wide. The Saints increased their lead two minutes from half time through a fine volley by Renzo Formosa following a corner kick by Jonathan Micallef.
Gharb had a good start after the resumption and in the 53rd minute they could have reduced the arrears but an effort by Jonathan Apap was turned in corner by goalie Samuel Micallef. St Lawrence were dangerous in the 61st minute through a fast break by Paul Anthony Attard which was blocked by goalie Scerri and from the rebound Christopher Cauchi concluded badly from a good position. St. Lawrence increased the score in the 72nd minute. Gothard Conti entered the area from the right flank with a personal action and lobbed over goalie Scerri into the opposite corner of goal. The score became 5-1 four minutes from time when Mario Cutajar took a loose ball from a short clearance of the defense, the ball hit defender Owen Formosa and ended in goal. Gothard Conti sealed the issue with the sixth goal scored in the 88th minute with a close ranged first timer to register a personal hat-trick. Referee: Andre’ Arciola |
