Munxar Falcons obtained a close win over Zebbug Rovers so that they are occupying the runners up position on the table with just three points less than the co-leaders. This was a direct clash between two teams who had the same points on the table prior to this match and where aiming to gain the necessary points to improve their status on the table. The match was well contested. Zebbug probably had the better chances during the first period, while Munxar expressed their best play after the break. The Falcons also managed to defend their one goal lead as they resisted to Zebbug’s reaction in the final stages of the match. Play was quite balanced during the first period although Zebbug held more possession of the ball. In the 9th minute Zebbug’s goalie Noel Saliba was called to make a difficult save to turn in corner a free kick by Joseph Cordina. The Rovers replied in the 15th minute with a header by Abdul Mutalib following some hesitation at Munxar’s rearguard that missed the target. One minute later Munxar’s Shaun Attard concluded high from close distance. In the 19th minute Munxar’s goalie Daniel Curmi block an effort by Philip Cardona following a solo effort and in the 26th minute a cross-shot by Abdul Mutalib ended just wide. Five minutes from half time a direct free kick by Chris Gafa was deflected on the post by goalie Curmi. The Falcons took command of play after the resumption and Zebbug found it very difficult to get out of their territory. Munxar opened the score in the 55th minute when the referee awarded a penalty for a foul on substitute William Cassar and Joseph Cordina converted from the spot kick. Zebbug continued to suffer pressure and three minutes later goalie Saliba blocked with difficulty an effort by Mario Azzopardi while a shot by William Cassar on 64 minutes ended just wide. The Rovers could have leveled the score on 67 minute but substitute Sylvan Galea headed wide an inviting cross by Mutalib. Zebbug’s last opportunity to save the result arrived in the 71st minute through a long ranged strike by Sylvan Galea that was once again solved by goalie Daniel Curmi. Munxar controlled play for the remaining minutes of play and neutralized Zebbug’s reaction until the final whistle. Referee: Reno Refalo |
