St Lawrence Spurs obtained an important win over Oratory Youths and with the three points obtained they end the first round at the top of the table.  This was a delicate match for the two sides.  St Lawrence needed the victory to consolidate the leadership, while Oratory were aiming for the maximum points to become challengers for promotion.  At the end the match was well contested as each side prevailed over the opponent for a half each but the encounter was only decided with a goal scored midway through the first period.

Oratory came out more aggressive and in the 4th minute they went close to scoring but Dione Lautier’s attempt ended just wide.  On 10 minutes the Youths were unlucky when a corner kick by Francesco Cini hit the crossbar.

St Lawrence opened the score in the 22nd minute.  A long ranged free kick by Mario Cutajar arrived to an unmarked Gothard Conti who headed in goal from close distance.  The Youths were not demoralised and produced a good reaction.  In the 33rd minute an effort by Alex Sacco missed the target and five minutes later a header by Dione Lautier from a cross by Francesco Cini ended high.

In the 44th minute St Lawrence produced a counter attack where Gothard Conti dribbled his direct opponent in the area but concluded weak and goalie Franklin Vella saved without difficulty.

The Saints took command of play after the break and in the 48th minute a first timer by Mario Cutajar from outside the area following a clearance by the defence ended wide.

As time passed by play took place mainly in the midfield  Oratory tried to recover the deficit but that ended up exposing their defensive department so that in the final stages of the match that the two sides created scoring opportunities.  On 80 minutes Oratory’s goalie Vella made a good save to neutralise an attempt by Conti following a cross by Shaun Muscat.

Five minutes later the same Vella was called to make a good save following an attempt by Shaun Muscat. One minute later Oratory had the best opportunity to level the score when a shot by Francesco Cini was deflected by substitute George Caruana and the ball ended wide. Two minutes from time Oratory’s central defender Chris Attard cleared off the line an effort by Shaun Muscat who concluded a fine move by Conti in the area.
