Gharb Rangers registered their first win of the championship in their match against Qala St Joseph. With these three points the two sides are now sharing the bottom place on the table. Although it was a surprise result, Gharb deserved the three points. They had good control of play and operated dangerous breaks that at the end decided the issue. The Saints seem frustrated following a series of negative results. They had a good patch of play during the first half hour of play but were demoralized as they suffered the first goal. At the end Gharb’s win could have been with a larger margin as their strikers lost some open scoring opportunities in the final stages of the match. Qala held command of play during the first period and produced some good scoring opportunities. In the 15th minute a low shot by Dennis Abela following a personal action was well saved in corner by goalie John Scerri and four minutes later Gharb’s Helios Grech had good recovery to block on Joe Xerri who was entering the area following a fast break. In the 26th minute Gharb’s goalkeeper was once again called to make a good save to block in corner another effort by Joe Xerri. From the resultant corner action, Gharb’s defense cleared badly but Shaun Meilaq concluded high from close distance. On the half hour Qala’s Denis Abela unmarked Mark Bonello in the area but the latter was unlucky as his low shot hit the base of the post. Gharb produced their first serious attempt at goal on 38 minutes with an angled shot by Jonathan Apap that was neutralized by goalie Kenny Grima. However, Gharb managed to open the score four minutes later. Jonathan Apap entered the area from the left flank and from his cross Roberto Sacco headed in goal with a close ranged header from the second post. Gharb continued to give more attention at their defense for the second period, while Qala’s reaction was sterile. Gharb were therefore in the driving seat and in the 54th minute they surprised their opponents and doubled the score. Clayton Hili escaped the offside trap and placed in goal with a a lob from outside the area. The Saints replied with a cross-shot by Dennis Abela ended just high. In the 61st minute Gharb went close to increase their lead but a long ranged strike by Clayton Hili hit the crossbar. One minute later, Gharb’s goalie Scerri once again blocked a low shot by Dennis Abela. On 78 minutes Qala goalie Grima went out of his area to stop a fast break by Clayton Hili. One minute later the Maroons were unlucky when a strike by Christian Portelli with the goalkeeper beaten hit the crossbar. In the 80th minute Qala’s goalkeeper stopped a lob by Jonathan Apap and three minutes later Clayton Hili entered Qala’s area but his low shot with the goalkeeper out of his position ended inches wide. Gharb continued to create danger and an effort by substitute Jonathan Vella three minutes from time ended wide. Referee: Joe Agius |
