Nadur Youngsters took revenge over Kercem Ajax for the defeat conceded in the second round of the championship and obtained three precious points to consolidate their leadership. It was a hard earned victory for Nadur which arrived through a goal scored by skipper Anthony Portelli after the break. The Ajax seemed confident for this match but did not manage to save the result and to earn the necessary points needed in their tussle against relegation.

The Youngsters were more adventurous in the early stages and a goal by Eric Nkwankwo in the 2nd minute was disallowed for an offside infringement. The Ajax replied five minutes later through an attempt by Franklin Adelson that was well saved by goalie Jonathan Xuereb. In the 10th minute a good shot by Josef Buttigieg was neutralised by goalie Courtney Mercieca. Minutes later Nadur failed to take advantage of a melee at Kercem’s goalmouth efforts by Anthony Portelli and Charles Hiliwere blocked by goalie Mercieca and by Mario Azzopardi. Kercem’s goalie was again called to make a difficult save in the 16th minute following an effort by Dejan Odevic and two minutes later Kercem’s Mario Azzopardi had a good header cleared off the line by Peter Buttigieg with the goalkeeper beaten. In the 20th minute a free kick by Alex Simoncic ended wide.

The Ajax had a better start after the break and a free kick by Manuel Tabone in the 50th minute was blocked by goalie Xuereb. However, six minutes later Nadur scored what had to be the decisive goal when Anthony Portelli placed in goal from close distance a confused action in Kercem’s area. The Ajax had a good reaction and in the 62nd minute Nadur’s Odevic risked an own goal in an attempt to cleared off the crossbar a corner kick by Jean Paul Mizzi. Kercem lost their best scoring opportunity in the 72nd minute when Manuel Tabone entered the area but his cross shot did not find any of his teammates to connect from close distance. In the final stages Nadur could have doubled the score from fast breaks and in the dying moments a low shot by substitute Shaun Muscat ended just wide.
