Qala St Joseph replied to Kercem’s victory and obtained three precious points with a victory over Ghajnsielem. The Maroons were very prudent for this match. They controlled play and avoided the risk to suffer an early goal. After the break the Saints punished their opponents especially through fast breaks while Ghajsielem never managed to recover the deficit. With this result Qala moved to the third place from the bottom of the table with a slender lead over Kercem Ajax and Xaghra United. Play took place mainly in the midfield during the first period and the two goalkeepers were rarely tested. Qala’s extreme defender Inim Aktpan was called to saved with difficulty a free kick by David Carabott in the 5th minute and the same goalkeeper saved a header by John Camilleri on the half hour following a cross by Carabott. Qala went closest to scoring in the 35th minute through a strike by Dione Lautier that ended just high. Two minutes later another free kick by David Carabott was neutralised by Qala’s goalie Aktpan. In the 41st minute the Saints failed to conclude a dangerous action when Dione Lautier entered the area, dribbled two defenders but Manuel Cordina failed to conclude in time Lautier’s pass and Ghajnsielem’s rearguard managed to clear the danger. Qala had an excellent start to the second period. After only 20 seconds of play Dione Lautier was floored in the area. The referee awarded a penalty and Mario Mifsud converted from the spot kick to put his side in the lead. Ghajsielem’s immediate reaction was sterile and their replied arrived in the 72nd minute through a header by Dominic Okanu from a cross by David Carabott that ended inches wide. Minutes later Jeremy Camilleri headed weak from a good position following a cross by Stefan Azzoardi and Aktpan saved without much difficulty. In the 71st minute Qala’s Charlie Attard had a long ranged shot that was well saved by goalie Victor Agius. The same Attard was unlucky minutes later when his strike hit the crossbar. However, Qala’s efforts were rewarded in the 77th minute when Dione Lautier doubled the score with a close ranged header following a corner kick by Mario Mifsud. In the 83rd minute a free kick by David Carabott was saved by goalie Aktpan, while Qala’s substitute Christian Portelli had a long ranged lob in the 85th minute that ended just over the crossbar.
