Victoria Hotspurs maintain their challenge for the title with three points obtained from an easy victory over Kercem Ajax. It was a typical match between two teams from the two extremes on the table. The Hotspurs administered the match and Kercem tried to give the best possible challenge. The match was practically conditioned in the first fifteen minutes of play when the Hotspurs opened a two-goal lead. The Ajax produced their best play after the break, reduced the arrears but failed to keep their momentum. With this result the Hotspurs are two points from leaders Nadur, the latter however have a game in hand; while Kercem are occupying the bottom place on the table with Xaghra United.

The citizens came out very aggressive and could have scored a goal after just nine seconds of play but Ricardo Saverino incredibly concluded over the crossbar with an open goal at his mercy following a cross by Daniel Farrugia. However, Victoria opened the score in the 5th minute through Noel Borg who turned in goal from a corner kick by the same Saverino.

In the 12th minute the Hotspurs doubled the score with a close ranged shot by Ricardo Saverino. In the 16th minute Kercem’s goalie Leonard Camilleri saved a shot from the edge of the area by Noel Borg. The Hotspurs reduced their pressure but were again dangerous in the 43rd minute through a strike by Fabiano Bassi that was saved with difficulty by goalie Leonard Camilleri.

After the resumption Kercem made two substitutions that gave new set-up to their attack. They managed to produce some pressure over their opponents and reduced the score in the 57th minute through a shot by substitute Gothard Conti following a through pass by Ejofor Nkwocha. The Hotspurs regained composure and re-established the two-goal lead in the 65th minute through a fine header by Anthony Briffa following a free kick by Ricardo Saverino.

The Ajax could have reduced the score in the 73rd minute but Conti shot high from a good position following a pass by Nkwocha. Kercem managed to score their second goal in the 79th minute. A header by Mario Azzopardi from a corner action was partially saved by goalie Mark Grima and from the rebound Ejofor Nkwocha netted from close distance.

Kercem had their best opportunity to score the equaliser in the 89th minute, but a free kick by Jean Paul Mizzi was saved with difficulty by goalie Mark Grima. In the third minute of stoppage time Kercem had Manuel Tabone sent off for dissent.
