Ghajnsielem obtained three precious points from their clash against Kercem Ajax to join other two teams at the runners-up position on the table. This was a clash between two teams who had the same points and both occupying the second place from the bottom on the table prior to this match. Therefore the two sides needed the three points at stake in their attempt to get out of the red zone at an early stage of the championship. Ghajnsielem’s victory was matured with a good performance after the break when they created the better scoring opportunities. Kercem, on the other hand produced their best play during the first period. They recovered form a difficult start and could have ended the first half in the lead. With this result, Kercem remain at the second place from the bottom with just three points more than bottom placed Xewkija Tigers. The Blacks had a better start and produced some pressure over the opponents for the first minutes of play. In the 3rd minute Kercem’s goalie Courtney Mercieca was well placed to turn in corner an effort by Frank Lee Galea. Ghajnsielem took the deserved lead on 9 minutes through a long ranged direct free kick by Thiago Dos Santos that surprised goalie Mercieca. However, the Ajax had an immediate reaction and leveled the score one minute later. Marlon Mamo entered the area and from his pass Marcos Aurelio Dos Santos crossed to find Milos Stojanovic who headed into an empty goal. Kercem were again dangerous on 11 minutes through an angled shot by Ribeiro from a pass by Marlon Mamo that hit the side of the net. In the 18th minute Kercem’s goalie Mercieca saved again in corner an effort by Kenneth Mercieca. Kercem gained confidence as time passed by and became more dangerous than their opponents. On 26 minute the Ajax were again dangerous through an attempt by Ribeiro that once again hit the side of the net. On 33 minutes Ghajnsielem’s goalie Richard Sammut saved well a direct free kick by Frank Camilleri. Five minutes from half time Kercem’s Ribeiro was once again close to scoring but his angled shot ended wide. |

In the 43rd minute an attempt by Milos Stojanovic was deflected by the defense and the ball ended on the crossbar. Ghajnsielem went close to regain the lead in the second minute of stoppage time before the break but Kenneth Mercieca headed wide a free kick by Cariaga. After the break Ghajnsielem tried to regain command of play and in the 53rd minute Errol Grima headed over the crossbar a free kick by Cariaga. However, the Blacks regained the lead on 55 minutes. Thiago Dos Santos crossed from the right flank and the ball arrived to an unmarked Errol Grima who guided the ball easily in goal from close distance. Kercem replied three minutes later through an effort by Ribeiro following a personal action that ended high. In the 61st minute Ghajnsielem operated a fast break but Kenneth Mercieca’s strike from a pass by Errol Grima ended inches wide from Kercem’s goal. Kercem leveled the score for the second time in the match on 71 minutes through a direct free kick by Jean Paul Mizzi that surprised goalie Sammut, as the latter only managed to save when the ball had crossed the line. However, Ghajnsielem regained the lead in less than one minte through an excellent header by Thiago Dos Santos, converting an inviting cross form the left by Kenneth Mercieca. Five minutes from time Ghajnsielem could have sealed the issue but an angled shot by Fernando Apap was well saved by goalie Mercieca. Referee: Marco Borg |
