SK Victoria Wanderers had an excellent start in the opening match of the championship and obtained maximum points from their difficult match against Ghajnsielem.  The victory for the Wanderers matured following a fine performance during the first half hour of play.  They suffered Ghajnsielem’s pressure for most of the remaining part of the match.  However, the citizens defended well and were also unlucky on at least three occasions when attempts by their strikers were stopped by the woodwork.

The Blacks showed great improvement form their match in the Independence Cup quarter final match.  They had central defender Martin Cremona missing due to suspension but had debutant striker Thiago Dos Santos who was making his debut.  The Brazilian striker showed was instrumental in Ghajnsielem’s reaction.  He was a threat to Victoria’s rearguard on more than one occasion through skillful moves.  Overall, a point for the Blacks could have been deserved but they probably compromised their match during the opening phases of the match.

The Wanderers took the initiative of play from the early stages and in the 3rd minute Ige Adesina tested goalie Joseph Grech with a shot from outside the area.  On 13 minutes an effort by the same Adesina from a free kick by Chris Sciortino hit the crossbar.  Victoria’s supremacy was rewarded three minutes later.  Ajibade Adesina passed to Ige Adesina on the right flank.  The latter unmarked Manwel Cordina at the other side of the area and the young striker placed in goal with a low shot.  Ghajnsielem replied on 27 minutes through an attempt by Rodrigo Cariaga that missed the target.  The Wanderers continued to be more dangerous and in the 31st minute Ajibade Adesina incredibly concluded high following an inviting through pass by Ige Adesina.  Six minutes later a good effort by Ige Adesina once again hit the crossbar.  Ghajnsielem could have leveled the score four minutes form half time as debutant Dos Santos entered the area following a pass by Errol Grima, but the Brazilian’s low shot ended inches wide.  One minute from half time Victoria’s Manwel Cordina once again was unmarked in the area by Ige Adesina but the final shot was blocked at the goalmouth with the goalkeeper beaten and from the rebound the second attempt by Victoria’s striker was cleared by the defense.

Ghajnsielem increased their pressure after the restart and kept the pressure over their opponents.  On 61 minutes an angled shot by Dos Santos ended just wide and six minutes later a header by Errol Grima from a free kick by Brian Meilak ended just high.  The Blacks were again dangerous on 73 minutes through a shot by Cariaga that was neutralized by goalie Adrian Parnis.  Victoria regained composure and became very dangerous in fast breaks.  In the 74th minute an effort by Ajibade Adesina ended wide.  On 83 minutes a fast break by Ige Adesina ended with a shot by Manwel Cordina that passed over the crossbar.  Five minutes later Ghajnsielem’s goalie Joseph Grech saved with difficulty a low shot by Ajibade Adesina and on 90 minutes a direct free kick by substitute Joseph Vella was stopped by the crossbar.  Ghajnsielem last opportunity to save the result arrived in the second minute of stoppage time through an effort by Dos Santos that ended just wide.
